BTS (Hangul: 방탄소년단, RR: Bangtan Sonyeondan; kanji: 防弾少年団, rōmaji: Bōdan Shōnendan; Chinese: 防弹少年团, pinyin: Fángdàn Shàonián Tuán) is a southern boy band, Korean, originally from Seoul. It was formed in 2013 by Big Hit Entertainment and consists of seven members: Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook.The name of the group, Bangtan Sonyeondan, is a combination of "방탄" which means "bulletproof" and "소년단" which means "boy scouts".


They debuted in June 2013 with the song No More Dream from their debut album, 2 Cool 4 Skool. They won "New Artist of the Year" at the 2013 MelOn Music Awards, 2013 Golden Disk Awards and 2014 Seoul Music Awards, where they won two bonsang ("grand prizes"). In 2016, the group won their first daesang ("main award") by being voted Artist of the Year at the Mnet Asian Music Awards.

In June 2017, BTS was named one of the twenty-five most influential people on the internet by Time. Their extended play Love Yourself: Her was the best-selling of 2017. In February 2018, the remix of MIC Drop in collaboration with Steve Aoki made them the first South Korean group to be certified gold by the RIAA.

The group is the author of several music composed for advertisements for major brands such as Mattel, Coca-Cola, Hyundai or Puma.

BTS holds multiple Guinness Book records for the most retweets on Twitter and the most views on YouTube in less than twenty-four hours with over 108.2 million views for their music video Butter in 2021. They are also the owners of over sixty daesang and four Billboard Music Awards. In all, they have more than two hundred and twenty Awards and three hundred and thirty-nine nominations.

On October 15, 2020, Big Hit Entertainment (formerly HYBE label) the group\"s label, went public; the shares issued double instantly, which considerably enriches the septet and makes their label, valued at 4.1 billion dollars, one of the thirty most important companies in South Korea[1].The first members of BTS were recruited through Big Hit Entertainment\"s auditions named Hit It in 2010 and 2011. These nationwide auditions recruited the artists from their local provinces, such was the case for Jimin and Jungkook from Pusan, or for V and Suga from Daegu.

Jungkook was recruited by Big Hit Entertainment after leaving Superstar K3 auditions. He formed from the Lifestyle Movement in Los Angeles in the summer of 2012. Jimin went to Busan University of the Arts where he studied in the modern dance department, where he was valedictorian. He was recruited during a private audition. Prior to his audition, Jin was a filmmaking student. RM was already performing as an underground rapper under the name Runch Randa and released several tracks, including a collaboration with Block B\"s Zico.
